Elon Musk is set to take part in a new Pentagon initiative examining the technologies and strategies that could shape future warfare, marking his return to a formal government-linked project after his earlier involvement with the Trump administration.
The initiative, known as Project Meridian, was announced by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on September 30 during a State of the Force address at Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia.
Musk will serve as one of the study’s co-leaders alongside Palmer Luckey, the founder of defense technology company Anduril, and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. Pentagon Chief Technology Officer Emil Michael will oversee the project.
The 120-day study is designed to examine how military conflicts could change as emerging technologies develop. Rather than focusing solely on existing weapons and capabilities, the Pentagon says the project will explore technologies that could influence future battlefields and determine what capabilities the U.S. military may need.
Artificial intelligence, autonomous weapons systems, robotics, biotechnology and directed-energy technologies are among the areas expected to receive attention. The study will also examine potential future operating environments, including domains extending beyond traditional battlefields.
The Pentagon is expected to receive the project’s findings within four months. The final assessment will reportedly include both a publicly releasable report and a classified section containing information that cannot be disclosed publicly.
Musk’s involvement brings a prominent technology entrepreneur into a Pentagon effort centered on military innovation. Through SpaceX and other ventures, Musk has been closely involved in areas such as space technology, satellite communications and artificial intelligence.
Luckey brings a different connection to the defense sector. His company, Anduril, develops autonomous systems and other technologies for military and security applications. His participation places another defense-industry executive at the center of the Pentagon’s examination of future warfare.
Gingrich adds extensive political and national-security experience to the group. The former Republican speaker of the House has remained involved in policy discussions involving defense, technology and military strategy since leaving Congress.
The project also comes alongside several other initiatives announced by Hegseth as the Pentagon outlines its approach to emerging military technology.
One proposal involves establishing an Autonomous Warfare Command, a four-star military command intended to coordinate the development and use of autonomous and robotic systems. Another initiative, FORTRESS America, focuses on strengthening military supply chains and improving the resilience of U.S. installations.
Together, the projects reflect the Pentagon’s growing focus on technologies that could alter how military forces operate. Autonomous systems and artificial intelligence have become increasingly important areas of military research as governments seek to understand how rapidly developing technology could affect future conflicts.
For Musk, Project Meridian represents a different type of government involvement from his earlier work with the Trump administration. His previous role focused largely on government restructuring and spending reductions, whereas the new assignment is specifically connected to defense technology and future military capabilities.
The announcement also renews attention on the relationship between Musk and President Donald Trump’s administration. Musk previously worked closely with Trump before the two became publicly divided. His return to a government-linked project indicates that the administration is again seeking his involvement in a specialized area of technology and defense policy.
Project Meridian is not itself an announcement of a new weapons system or military deployment. Instead, the study is intended to assess technological developments and provide recommendations for future defense planning.
Its conclusions could influence Pentagon decisions involving research priorities, military procurement and the development of emerging capabilities.
The 120-day deadline means the group has a relatively short period to assess a broad range of technologies and potential future threats. Once the review is completed, the public portion of the report is expected to provide greater insight into the Pentagon’s thinking about the changing nature of warfare.
For now, the initiative places Musk, Luckey and Gingrich at the center of a high-profile examination of how technology could reshape military operations in the years ahead.
