Apple has expanded its wireless audio lineup with the launch of AirPods 5, bringing upgraded sound, stronger Active Noise Cancellation and new intelligent features to its open-ear design. The new earbuds were announced on September 9 alongside Apple’s latest product releases and are aimed at users who want advanced audio features without the tighter fit of traditional in-ear models.
One of the most notable additions is improved Active Noise Cancellation. Apple says AirPods 5 with ANC can cut external noise by as much as 50 percent more than the previous AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation. The technology combines updated acoustic components with computational audio to deliver stronger noise reduction while maintaining the open-ear form factor.
The design continues to allow users to hear more of their surroundings than they typically would with sealed in-ear earbuds. Apple has also enhanced Transparency mode, which is intended to make environmental sounds and nearby conversations sound more natural when the feature is activated.
Audio performance has received several upgrades as well. AirPods 5 feature a redesigned multiport acoustic architecture and next-generation Adaptive EQ. These technologies are designed to adjust the listening experience according to how the earbuds fit and provide a more detailed and balanced sound.
Personalized Spatial Audio is included, giving supported music, movies and other content a more immersive presentation. Adaptive Audio can also automatically adjust between noise cancellation and Transparency mode depending on the environment around the listener.
Apple is adding several hands-free capabilities to the new earbuds. Conversation Awareness can detect when someone begins speaking and lower the volume of whatever is playing. Users can then continue their conversation without needing to remove the AirPods.
The earbuds also work with newer Apple intelligence features. Compatible devices can provide access to Siri AI through hands-free interactions, while head movements can be used for certain responses. Live Translation is another addition, allowing supported conversations to be translated through the AirPods when paired with compatible hardware and software.
Apple is offering AirPods 5 in two versions. The standard model is priced at ₹14,900 in India, while the AirPods 5 configuration with a Wireless Charging Case costs ₹17,900. Active Noise Cancellation is available with both versions.
The Wireless Charging Case edition comes with additional charging options, including compatibility with USB-C, Apple Watch chargers and Qi-certified charging systems. Apple has also introduced swipe-based volume controls on the stems, allowing users to raise or lower the volume directly from the earbuds.
Battery life remains another important feature. With Active Noise Cancellation enabled, AirPods 5 can provide up to five hours of listening from the earbuds on a single charge. When used with the charging case, total listening time can reach up to 22 hours with ANC activated.
Apple has also improved the earbuds’ resistance to everyday exposure. The AirPods 5 carry an IP57 rating, offering protection against dust, sweat and water and making them more suitable for workouts and outdoor activities.
Pre-orders for the new AirPods 5 are underway, with availability expected to begin on September 18. The launch gives Apple customers another choice between traditional in-ear models and the company’s open-ear approach.
