A 19-year-old man has been taken into police custody following a shooting at Virginia State University (VSU) that injured five people and triggered an extensive search across the campus.

The incident took place early Saturday morning near the university’s Quad Annexes, located close to student housing. Authorities said five individuals, ranging in age from 17 to 23, sustained injuries in the shooting. The victims were taken to local hospitals for treatment. One of those injured was reportedly in critical condition, while the remaining victims were expected to recover.

In response to the shooting, law enforcement officers began searching the university grounds for the suspected gunman. Students and employees were instructed to stay inside as officers checked buildings and other areas of the campus.
