Jessica Pegula has once again reached the final four at the U.S. Open, earning another opportunity to challenge world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka on the sport’s biggest stage in New York.
The American third seed booked her semifinal place after overcoming fellow American Emma Navarro in the quarterfinals. Her reward is a meeting with defending champion Sabalenka, creating another chapter in a rivalry that has become increasingly familiar at Grand Slam level.
Pegula has been building momentum throughout this year’s tournament. Her run included a difficult encounter with Leylah Fernandez in the third round, when she recovered after losing the opening set to eventually win 1-6, 6-4, 6-3. She followed that comeback with a more controlled victory over Sorana Cirstea to move into the quarterfinals.
The 32-year-old American arrived in New York with considerable experience of deep runs at the tournament. She was the runner-up at the 2024 U.S. Open and has established herself as one of the most consistent players on the WTA Tour. Her latest appearance in the semifinals gives her another chance to turn that consistency into a first Grand Slam singles title.
Standing between Pegula and another U.S. Open final is an opponent she knows particularly well.
Sabalenka secured her semifinal berth earlier after surviving a major test against Wimbledon champion Linda Noskova. The Belarusian prevailed 7-6(1), 3-6, 7-6(10-7) in a contest that lasted more than two hours. Noskova pushed the defending champion to the limit, but Sabalenka remained composed when the match reached its decisive stages.
The victory was especially important for Sabalenka because she is attempting to win the U.S. Open for a third consecutive year. Reaching the semifinals for a sixth straight appearance at Flushing Meadows underlines her remarkable consistency at the tournament.
Pegula and Sabalenka have already developed a significant history against each other. Their meetings have featured contrasting styles, with Pegula relying heavily on consistency, accuracy and court positioning while Sabalenka brings enormous power from both sides of the court.
Their Grand Slam rivalry has also produced memorable encounters in New York. Sabalenka defeated Pegula in the 2025 U.S. Open semifinals after dropping the opening set, eventually recovering to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Their rivalry has not been one-sided outside the U.S. Open, however. Earlier in 2026, Pegula defeated Sabalenka in a dramatic semifinal at the Berlin tournament, winning 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-0. That result gives the American reason to believe she can again trouble the world No. 1 when they meet in New York.
For Pegula, the upcoming semifinal represents both a challenge and an opportunity. She will need to withstand Sabalenka’s aggressive baseline game while maintaining the patient approach that has helped her reach another deep Grand Slam run.
Sabalenka, meanwhile, will enter the contest with a larger goal in mind: extending her reign at Flushing Meadows and moving one victory closer to a historic third consecutive championship.
With Pegula seeking another U.S. Open final and Sabalenka defending her title, their latest encounter carries plenty of history and significance. The American will be hoping that her recent success against the top seed can translate into another breakthrough on the New York stage.
