A 19-year-old man has been taken into police custody following a shooting at Virginia State University (VSU) that injured five people and triggered an extensive search across the campus.
The incident took place early Saturday morning near the university’s Quad Annexes, located close to student housing. Authorities said five individuals, ranging in age from 17 to 23, sustained injuries in the shooting. The victims were taken to local hospitals for treatment. One of those injured was reportedly in critical condition, while the remaining victims were expected to recover.
In response to the shooting, law enforcement officers began searching the university grounds for the suspected gunman. Students and employees were instructed to stay inside as officers checked buildings and other areas of the campus. Officials also placed the university under a temporary lockdown while they assessed whether the suspect posed an immediate danger.
After several hours of searching, officers reportedly found the suspect concealed inside a closet at Seward Hall at around 4 p.m. Authorities identified him as 19-year-old Camron Harris, a resident of Henrico, Virginia. Police said Harris is not enrolled as a student at Virginia State University. He was arrested after officers located him inside the campus building.
The lockdown was subsequently lifted once authorities determined that there was no longer an immediate threat to students and staff. Investigators remained on campus to collect evidence, speak with witnesses and establish the circumstances that led to the shooting.
Police have not yet announced a motive for the incident. Investigators are also examining whether the suspect had any previous connection with the victims and whether other individuals could have played a role in the shooting.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns surrounding security at college campuses, particularly in areas frequented by students. University officials are continuing to work with law enforcement while the investigation remains active.
Authorities have asked anyone who may have witnessed the shooting or has relevant information to come forward. Investigators are expected to release additional details, including information about charges, as the case progresses.
