Kansas City Chiefs Receiver Thornton Injured With Dislocated Ankle

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tyquan Thornton suffered a dislocated left ankle during the team’s 30-27 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, creating a significant injury concern for Kansas City despite the dramatic win.

Thornton went down late in the fourth quarter after catching a 55-yard pass from quarterback Patrick Mahomes. The explosive reception put the Chiefs in a strong position deep inside Raiders territory, but Thornton was tackled from behind by Las Vegas defensive back Treydan Stukes.

The receiver initially appeared to get up after the play, but he soon went back to the ground after realizing he had sustained a serious injury. Medical personnel quickly came onto the field to examine him, and Thornton was eventually removed from the game on a cart.

The Chiefs later confirmed that Thornton had suffered a dislocated ankle. His ankle was reset by medical personnel, and he was able to return to Kansas City with the team. Further examinations, including another medical evaluation, are expected to determine the extent of the injury and provide a clearer recovery timeline.

At this stage, Thornton is considered out indefinitely, leaving the Chiefs waiting for additional information before determining how long they could be without one of their key receiving options.

The injury was particularly unfortunate because Thornton had delivered one of his strongest performances of the season before leaving the contest. He finished the game with five receptions for 111 yards and two touchdowns, establishing himself as one of Mahomes’ most productive targets throughout the matchup.

His biggest play came late in the fourth quarter when he hauled in the 55-yard pass that helped move Kansas City into scoring range. The Chiefs eventually completed their comeback and secured a three-point victory, but Thornton’s injury overshadowed much of the late-game drama.

Kansas City also had another concern at wide receiver during the game. Rashee Rice was forced to leave earlier in the contest because of a hamstring injury and did not return. Having two receivers suffer injuries in the same game could leave the Chiefs with additional questions about their depth at the position.

Thornton had become an important part of Kansas City’s receiving group after returning to the team in March. The Chiefs re-signed him following a previous season in which he recorded 19 catches for 438 yards and three touchdowns. His speed and ability to make plays downfield had made him a valuable option within the team’s offensive system.

Entering Sunday’s game, Thornton had already contributed during the opening weeks of the season. He finished the first four games with 11 receptions for 219 yards and two touchdowns, according to the Chiefs’ official statistics. His performance against Las Vegas added another 111 receiving yards and two scores before the ankle injury brought his day to an early end.

The setback also comes at an important point in Kansas City’s season. The Chiefs improved to 4-0 with the victory, maintaining their unbeaten start, but the potential loss of Thornton could force the coaching staff to make adjustments to the receiving rotation.

Head coach Andy Reid expressed concern following the injury, while Thornton’s teammates offered their support as he began the medical evaluation process.

Kansas City will now closely monitor Thornton’s condition and await further medical assessments. The Chiefs will also need to keep track of Rice’s hamstring issue as they prepare for their upcoming schedule.

For a team that has started the season with four straight victories, the injuries to two receivers represent a major challenge. Thornton’s availability, in particular, will remain a key storyline as Kansas City waits for a definitive diagnosis and a clearer timetable for his return.
