Spain continued their flawless UEFA Nations League campaign with a 3-1 victory over Czechia, with Lamine Yamal once again playing a key role in another convincing performance from the reigning world champions.
The Barcelona forward needed only five minutes to make his presence felt at the Carlos Tartiere Stadium in Oviedo. Yamal collected the ball before producing a powerful left-footed finish to put Spain ahead and give the hosts an ideal start to the contest.
The latest goal added to what has been an impressive international run for the teenager. Yamal had already scored twice in Spain’s previous 4-1 win over Croatia, underlining how important he has become to Luis de la Fuente’s attacking setup.
Spain’s early pressure eventually produced a second goal before the interval. Rodri found himself in the right position inside the penalty area and reacted quickly to finish from close range, sending Spain into halftime with a two-goal advantage.
The hosts had controlled much of the opening period, moving the ball effectively and repeatedly testing the Czech defence. Their possession-based approach allowed Spain to dictate the rhythm of the match while Yamal and the other forwards looked to exploit openings.
Czechia returned from the break with a more aggressive approach. Their increased pressure eventually paid off when Jiri Slama reduced the deficit with roughly 20 minutes remaining, suddenly giving the visitors a route back into the game.
The visitors later appeared to have levelled the contest, but their effort was disallowed after officials identified a foul during the build-up. Czechia’s task became even more difficult when Ladislav Krejci was shown a red card late in the match.
Spain then put the result beyond doubt through Mikel Merino. The midfielder reacted to a rebound and converted to restore Spain’s two-goal lead, allowing the home side to see out the closing stages without further trouble.
The win leaves Spain with three victories from their opening three matches and a maximum nine points. The result also extended their remarkable unbeaten sequence, which has reportedly reached 41 games.
For Yamal, another goal represents further evidence of his rapid development on the international stage. Despite his young age, he has increasingly become one of Spain’s most influential attacking players and a regular source of goals and creativity.
The teenager’s effectiveness has also been complemented by Spain’s experienced midfield. Rodri’s control and distribution helped the hosts establish authority during the first half, allowing the forward players to operate higher up the pitch and create attacking opportunities.
Spain did face a more difficult second half, with Czechia showing greater urgency after the restart. De la Fuente later acknowledged that his team’s intensity dropped following changes to the lineup, although Spain ultimately managed to regain control and secure the points.
The victory keeps Spain at the summit of their group, while England sit three points behind after their emphatic 7-0 victory over Croatia. The result sets up an increasingly competitive race for first place as the Nations League campaign develops.
Spain can now look ahead to the next round of fixtures with confidence. Their perfect record provides a strong platform, while Yamal’s continued scoring form gives De la Fuente another major attacking weapon.
At just 19, Yamal is already becoming a central figure in Spain’s ambitions. His early strike against Czechia was another important contribution, and if his current form continues, the young forward could play a decisive role in Spain’s pursuit of another major international trophy.
