Penn State will take on Northwestern with a significantly depleted roster after 12 players were ruled unavailable for the Big Ten matchup. The extensive list affects several areas of the team, including the offense, defensive front, secondary and special teams.
The availability report confirms that wide receiver Koby Howard will miss his second straight game. Howard has been sidelined since sustaining an injury during Penn State’s game against Buffalo, leaving the Nittany Lions with one fewer option at wide receiver.
Penn State will also be missing tight end Cooper Alexander and offensive lineman Will Tompkins. Their absences add to the personnel challenges facing the team as it prepares for another conference contest.
The defensive unit has several notable absences of its own. Defensive end Lavar Arrington II remains sidelined following knee surgery and is expected to be unavailable for another one to three weeks. His absence leaves Penn State with fewer choices along the defensive line.
The secondary is also dealing with multiple unavailable players. Cornerbacks Joshua Johnson, Tyler Armstead and Christian Askew have all been ruled out for the Northwestern game. With those players unable to take the field, Penn State will have to rely on its remaining defensive backs to handle the Wildcats’ passing attack.
Additional defensive absences include defensive ends Max Granville, Mason Robinson and Dayshaun Burnett, along with linebacker Cam Smith. The number of players missing from the defensive unit could lead to changes in rotations and increased playing opportunities for other members of the roster.
Special teams will be affected as well. Kicker Christiano Rosa has been ruled out, meaning Penn State will have to make alternative arrangements in the kicking game.
One player whose status had not been completely settled before kickoff was cornerback Daryus Dixson. He was listed as a game-time decision after dealing with an injury. Dixson had started Penn State’s first four games and had participated in practice during the week, leaving his availability as one of the final personnel questions surrounding the matchup.
The Wildcats and Nittany Lions enter the meeting with conference ambitions of their own. Penn State is 3-1 after opening its Big Ten schedule with a loss to Wisconsin, while Northwestern entered the contest at 2-1 following a close defeat against Indiana.
The game also marks Penn State’s first visit to Northwestern’s newly rebuilt Ryan Field, adding another element to the matchup.
For Penn State, managing the extensive list of absences will be a central part of the game-day challenge. The coaching staff will need to make adjustments to personnel groupings and rotations while giving additional responsibilities to healthy players.
The situation is particularly important on defense, where several players across the defensive line, linebacker corps and secondary are unavailable. Offensively, the team will likewise have to compensate for missing contributors at wide receiver, tight end and along the offensive line.
With 12 players already ruled out and Dixson’s status uncertain until game time, Penn State enters the Northwestern matchup with a number of roster-related questions. How effectively the Nittany Lions adjust to the absences will become one of the key storylines as the conference clash gets underway.
