Phillies vs. Braves Set for Winner-Take-All Wild Card Game 3

The Atlanta Braves secured their place in the National League Division Series after defeating the Philadelphia Phillies 6-2 in a decisive Wild Card Game 3 on Thursday night.

The series finale at Truist Park followed a dramatic opening two games. Atlanta took Game 1 by a 5-3 score, but Philadelphia answered the following night with a 4-3 victory in 10 innings. With the series tied at one game apiece, the third meeting became a winner-take-all contest, with the victorious team moving on to the next stage of the postseason.

Atlanta quickly seized control of the deciding game. Michael Harris II provided an early spark with a three-run home run in the first inning, giving the Braves an immediate advantage and putting pressure on Philadelphia from the outset.

The Braves continued to control the game as their pitching limited the Phillies’ offense. Ray Kerr opened the contest for Atlanta and delivered 3⅓ scoreless innings, helping establish an early foundation for the Braves’ bullpen.

Philadelphia had entered the final game with considerable momentum following its Game 2 comeback. The Phillies rallied late in that contest, with Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper hitting consecutive home runs in the eighth inning before Alec Bohm delivered the go-ahead homer in the 10th. Andrew Painter then closed out the victory to keep Philadelphia’s postseason hopes alive.

The Phillies were scheduled to rely on Aaron Nola to begin Game 3. Nola had faced Atlanta three times during the regular season, recording a 4.50 ERA across those appearances. Philadelphia also had several additional pitching options available as the game progressed.

Atlanta’s pitching strategy centered on Kerr serving as the opener, with Grant Holmes expected to handle a larger share of the innings. Kerr had been particularly effective since making his season debut on Aug. 17, posting a 1.47 ERA over 18⅓ innings during that stretch.

Both teams also entered the deciding game with important offensive contributors. For Philadelphia, Schwarber, Harper and Bohm were among the hitters who had produced key moments during the first two games. J.T. Realmuto had also collected two hits and driven in two runs during the opening contests.

Atlanta had received strong production from Michael Harris II and Mauricio Dubón. Harris had recorded four hits in his first eight at-bats of the series, while Dubón entered Game 3 with three hits in nine at-bats.

Ronald Acuña Jr., meanwhile, was still searching for his first hit of the series after beginning the postseason matchup 0-for-6.

The Braves’ victory brought an end to Philadelphia’s Wild Card run and sent Atlanta into the NL Division Series. The Braves will now turn their attention to the next round of the postseason, while the Phillies’ season comes to a close after a tightly contested three-game series.

The deciding victory capped a series that featured late-inning drama, power hitting and several momentum swings before Atlanta ultimately pulled away in the final contest.
